The UMC - A Guide

Recommended Posts

WRITING AT THE UMC.

01. The first thing to remember is that, technically, no one is quite sure where the location of the UMC stands. Each Supreme Mugwump is told the night they are elected, but they are bound by a myriad of complex spells that they can neither discuss the location nor write about the location. It is truly a secret to be kept. With that said, as writers, you can be aware that the location is deep within the Atlantic Ocean. Even if a wizard or witch were able to locate it and dive down to the location, they would not be able to see the structure with the naked eye. If they could, however, they would see a grand building - almost like a castle underwater.

02. There is only one way in and out of the UMC Headquarters: floo powder. Upon being hired, employees of the United Magical Confederation are given monthly jars of floo powder to travel to and from work. The floo powder is deep red in color and will take employees to the special employee fireplace - generally away from the more public area. Visitors, guests, and the like are sent floo powder prior to their approved trip to the headquarters. This floo color varies depending on the type of visit the person will be taking. A golden powder is given to those with official business while a paler blue is given to those just visiting without official business.

03. The UMC is like many government buildings - it has tight security. Each witch and wizard who visits must get their wand checked by a security guard, but they are allowed to retain the wand during their visit. Unless approved, it would be impossible to make it into the UMC to cause havoc without being noticed.

04. There are lifts/elevators and stairs to navigate the large building. The UMC employs thousands of ghosts who help direct people through the building. It's main set-up comes from the Ministry of Magic - so it's very similar to the government we are familiar with from the books.

DESCRIPTION OF THE UMC HEADQUARTERS.

As mentioned previously, the physical location to the Headquarters of the United Magical Confederation (UMC) is shrouded in mystery. However, as writers, we know that it is located deep in the Atlantic Ocean. The structure was found many centuries ago, taken into possession by the Ministry of Magic (UK), and largely forgotten about. If one was actually able to see the building with their eyes, it would probably look something like THIS. However, it is too far down for any muggle to see it and the magic surrounding it obscures it from those with magical abilities to truly see it.

The Headquarters, as far as one can see, is made up of a large structure divided into an Eastern Corridor, a Central Rotunda, and a Western Corridor. The Rotunda is generally the first place visitors see when coming to the UMC. Fireplaces line two opposite walls and it is through these that visitors are pushed out and into the grand Rotunda. Windows, all around really, mirror a regular, outside day. Many say that it would say it seems the Headquarters are smack dab in the middle of a meadow. Once pass security, visitors will find themselves in the center of the Rotunda. Ceiling windows mirror the day - sunny, rainy, whatever the magical charm has decided for the day - and from here they can connect to the entire UMC.

The Rotunda leads to both corridors, as well as to the departments that call it home. Likewise, it is home to the offices of the Supreme Mugwump and their administration. No one is quite sure how to get to the office, or really if it is just one they claim, but those with the right credentials will find the journey rather pleasing. Tapestries and paintings abound - showing off the idols of Government Services. Directly in the center of the Rotunda is the Fountain of Magical Brethren - a gift from the UK during the creation of the UMC. The Rotunda has four floors - plenty of space for the Supreme Mugwump to work. It also reaches deep into the ground, holding the many courtrooms and holding cells. A lovely café is also housed here - a nice place to officials and visitors to enjoy some drinks and snacks.

The Eastern Corridor also has four floors - inhabited by the Departments of Magical Law Enforcement, International Magical Cooperation, & Magical Accidents & Catastrophes. Taken by name from the former Ministry of Magic (UK), each department is given a floor - with the first floor being used as a common-space. This is also the floor that leads from the Rotunda by way of a marble staircase. The first floor is also filled with meeting spaces, conference rooms, and a cafeteria, opened 24/7. A lift at the opposite end of the first floor can move one either down to the Department of Magical Accidents & Catastrophes or up to the Departments of International Magical Cooperation or Magical Law Enforcement. Each head of the departments holds an office within a tower that runs up from the Eastern Corridor.

The Western Corridor houses four floors, as well as a fully function winery (put in by current SM, @Supreme Mugwump Simone Cruz).  Home to the Departments of Magical Transport, Creature Advancement, & Mysteries, these names were again taken from the former Ministry of Magic (UK) - with Control and Regulation of Magical Creatures being changed as times changed. Much like it's counterpart, the first floor is the main entrance from the Rotunda - via another marble staircase - but this side also boasts a grand ballroom for entertaining and concerts. Employees and visitors must cross each day to visit the cafeteria in the east or bring food from home. A life at the opposite end of the first floor can take you down one level to the Department of Mysteries or up to the Departments of Creature Advancement or Magical Transport. As with the east, each department head holds an office within a tower that runs up from the Western Corridor.

The Atrium can be accessed from any of the buildings and is rather spectacular. While we know (or don't if you are IC) this place is under the ocean, you wouldn't think it to look around. The charmed sky provides a balance of weather elements, but can be coaxed to provide special changes for special evenings. Toward the back, through a door, you will also find the Department of the Interior, a newly formed Department tasked with ensuring magical plants and the magical world as an environment are protected. The Atrium serves as another place for folks to mingle and parties to be had. A large tapestry, baring the current Supreme Mugwump's face, is generally hung from the back of the building.
