Ability Claim

ABILITIES 101.

1. An ability, as defined, is the possession of the means or skill to do something. Likewise, it can be defined as the talent, skill, or proficiency in a particular area. Here on Magical Awakenings, we foster the ideals that many of your characters will have abilities unique to their personalities. Maybe they are a wonderful singer or artist - those are great. However, the information found in this thread is in regards to the magical abilities your characters can possess.

2. Each ability is divided into a learned ability and an ability that one is genetic. A 'learned ability' is something that can be taught or developed through independent study. A 'genetic ability' is one that is passed down through the blood of one or both parents.

3. As mentioned, we allow three abilities per character. Each character may have one genetic ability and two learned abilities, OR three learned abilities. You have the chance to request those during your request process. Please take that into account when submitting your request. All abilities take time to develop. You are born a Seer, but it doesn't just all come to you at the age of eleven. If you request an ability or abilities for characters, we ask that you remember that all abilities develop - make it part of your story. We also require that when requesting any ability, you decide how this ability will affect your character's life.

4. If you feel that your character(s) require more than three abilities, you will need to submit the petition form to the @SITE OWNER. Please send them a PM with the extra ability, why, and extra information to support They will make a final decision and let you know. Likewise, we reserve the right to a seven day grace period from the time of posting to the time of addition to the wall for all requests.

5. We have no current ratios on abilities, as we want everyone to feel able to choose as they see fit and we would hate to truly discourage the growth of a character. We offer this to our writers because we trust them to follow all regulations and to ensure they are committed to ensuring a well-balanced forum.

6. Only the abilities that appear on the following list are approved abilities for the forum. One of the major questions we get is regarding wordless magic. Non-verbal magic (also commonly referred to as wordless magic) is something taught to students starting in the fifth year. As such, we have removed it from the abilities listing. However, don't abuse this. Here is a HELPFUL LINK regarding this. The @SITE OWNER reserves the right to remove or add any creatures as they see fit for the good of the forums.

7. Ability claims are only held for NINETY (90) days. That means, regardless of the character or writer, you might lose your stuff if your last log-in date is NINETY (90) days past.

8. The ability to cast the Patronus Charm has been added to the learned ability section. Requesting the ability to cast the charm does NOT go toward the maximum of three - so think of this as a freebie. If you wish for your character to have this ability, you can select it during your request, however your character must 15 or older to be added to the list. If your character isn't over 15 when you send in your request, you can always have it added - just contact your global moderator!

9. Please note when requesting an animagi form, your character must be 17 or older. If your character isn't over 17 when you send in your request, you can always have it added - just contact your global moderator! You would just want to keep one spot opened in the allotted three allowable abilities.

WHO DO I CONTACT WITH QUESTIONS?!

If you have not heard back on your request within SEVEN (7) DAYS, please send a message to the @SITE OWNER!

GENETIC ABILITIES.

ANIMAL TELEPATHY.

The gift of Animal Telepathy is both a wonder and a curse. The ability to not only understand the animals around you, but the ability to communicate can be quite tricky. This ability is said to have first been born with Merlin and he used it as a way to keep King Arthur protected during battle and so that he would know what was going on when he couldn't be there himself. The ability only works with animals from the animal kingdom - you won't be able to speak with insects or plants of anything of that nature. It has the tendency of skipping many generations.

CLAIRVOYANCE.

Also referred to as ESP, the ability of a Clairvoyant has long been a contested sort of an ability. Those truly capable of it are said to be able to perceive events in the future or beyond the normal sensory contact. Basically those with this ability are able to gain information about an object, person, location, or physical event through means other than the average five senses. Some go into a trance while others simply pick up on the information from mere glances. Likewise, some may use pad and markers to write out messages while in a trace. This has the tendency to be prevalent through two generations then disappear for a bit.

EMPATHY.

The ability of an Empath should not be confused with being a good reader of people. An Empath has the means to understand and share in the feelings of those around them. From the greatest of feelings to the darkest of moments, an empath must be able to not only deal with keeping their own emotions in check, but also deal with the emotions constantly surrounding them. It is one of the more difficult abilities to control. It is extremely hereditary. It is the type of ability that is passed through many generations without skipping.

METAMORPHAMGUS.

A Metamorphmagus is born with the ability - one that allows the person(s) to change their appearance at will. Unlike the use of polyjuice potion or a spell, the metamorphmagus can continue on with the change as long as they feel appropriate. This is very rare - very rare indeed. While they can change their outward physical appearance, their sexual organs (with the exception of breats) will remain unchanged. It is the type of ability that is passed through many generations, but has been known to skip generations.

OMNILINGUALISM.

Quite the helpful ability if you plan to travel the world, an Omnilingualist has the means to understand, speak, and write any language without any proper training. The user can immediately detect dialects and adapt to it quickly. It is the type of ability that is passed through many generations, but has been known to skip generations.

PARSELTOUNGE.

Parseltounge is, simply, the language of the snakes. It is very rare and at one time many thought the ability had died with salazar slytherin. It is a hereditary ability and one can not be born with the gift. Those who harness this ability are referred to parselmouths. To those without the ability, it sounds like a whole bunch of hissing without breaths. While many can imitate the noise for benefit, it is ill-advised as they may not be able to control what is behind those protections. It is extremely hereditary. It is the type of ability that is passed through many generations without skipping.

SEER.

Another rare ability, it is said that a Seer is able to engage the inner eye. The Seer can see exact moments in history and are the sole describers of prophecies. It is solely hereditary and can not be learned. Seers are never self aware of what they foresee during a trance unless they are told or shown after. Prophecies can be spoken, written, or even drawn. This ability is known to skip generations, at times totally disappearing.

TELEPATHY.

The ability of someone with Telepathy crosses a great deal of boundaries, especially when properly controlled. A Telepath can read thoughts, understand the emotions, and - at full potential - manipulate them. It is a very challenging ability to undertake. This ability is known to skip generations, at times totally disappearing.

LEARNED ABILITIES.

ANIMAGUS.

An animagus is a witch or wizard who has the ability to morph himself or herself into an animal at will. Unlike metamorphmagus, this is a learned skill - not hereditary. Upon successful control of the ability, the witch or wizard must register with the umc. Failure to do so, and if caught performing the ability, could lead to severe punishments. The process to becoming an animagus is not a simple one - it is one of the toughest processes known to the magical community. Improper training could have horrifying consequences - some that one may never recover. It is vital to know that the animal you turn into isn't a conscious decision. The form is made from your own personality and can never be changed once it has been learned.

CHLOROKINESIS.

It was long rumored that Ponoma Sprout had the ability of Chlorokinesis. This ability gives the witch or wizard control over all plant life. From the smallest blades of grass to the largest trees in the forest, the ability also allows for the witch or wizard to communicate with the plant life. This comes in handy in physical matters as the person is able to control the speed a plant grows, the way vines move, or end the life of a plant.

CORPOREAL PATRONUS.

The Patronus Charm is the most famous and one of the most powerful defensive charms known to wizard-kind. It's an immensely complicated, very difficult spell that evokes a partially-tangible positive energy force known as a Patronus or spirit guardian. The charm was primarily designed for defence against Dementors and Lethifolds, against which there is no other protection. It is evident from old woodcuts and scrolls that the Patronus Charm has been used since ancient times. It therefore is unknown who created it, or when it was first invented. The charm also has a long association with those fighting for lofty or noble causes. You can only be added to this list upon your character being fifteen. As mentioned in the rules, this ability does NOT go toward the maximum amount of abilities per character - think of it as a freebie if you want this.

CRYOKINESIS.

A very rare ability and one hard to control, Cryokinesis enables the witch or wizard to generate and manipulate the air molecules and turn them to ice. This ability also gives the witch or wizard a higher tolerance to the colder temperatures of the winter seasons. Once fully mastered, the user may find they are able to manipulate larger bodies of water and even use the ability in self defense.

HEALING HANDS.

An ability rumored to be used by famous healer Mungo Bonham, Healing Hands allow for the healing ability of minor injuries without the aid of wands or potions. The ability rests directly in the witch or wizard's hands and a soft blue glow illuminates when the ability is put into practice. As the ability grows and becomes controlled, it is possible to heal more serious injuries, but anything life-threatening usually will need full medical attention beyond the use of healing hands.

HYDROKINESIS.

Much like Cyrokinesis, this ability is both rare and hard to control. Hydrokinesis allows the witch or wizard control over water. From a mere spill to the largest of oceans, the user is enabled to cause the smallest of ripples to the grandest waves - all at the hand of the creator.

LEGILIMENCY.

A Legilimens is someone with the ability to navigate the intricate layers of another's mind and interpret their thoughts. This ability should not be confused with a mind reader - the witch or wizard can extract emotions and memories from the other person and use those to their advantage. Unless you know wordless and wandless magic, the incantation "Legilimens" must be used to properly hone this ability. Depending on how strong the connection holds, one may be able to imprint false memories upon the other.

OCCLUMENCY.

An Occlumens has the ability to protect their mind from the interference from a Legilimens - allowing them to seal their mind from the magical intrusion. it is a tougher ability to learn since you have to fully be aware of your thoughts at all times and is even discussed at some schools as a learning tool.

PYROKINESIS.

Another very rare and unstable ability, Pyrokinesis allows the witch or wizard to create and manipulate fire. It is said, in certain circles, that Lord Voldemort may have been a holder of this ability due to the fact that he seemed to be able to control fire - as noted by witnesses during the battle at the Ministry of Magic in 1995.

TELEKINESIS.

The mind is a marvelous thing and the ability of a Telekinetic is just as wondrous. The ability allows you to influence a physical system without physical interaction. This is a tough ability because it regards a great deal of mental stamina and mental concentration. However, some are lucky to be so focused that the ability comes eerily natural.

WANDLESS MAGIC.

The art of Wandless Magic is a complex ability to learn. The wand is such an integral part to the early education of the majority of the wizarding world that it is odd for most to learn just how to handle magic without a source for channeling it. So those who can fully master it are all the better for it.
